After finally earning their first win of the season against Burnley in late October, Bournemouth followed it up with a spirited performance but a defeat against Liverpool in the Carabao Cup before being thrashed by Man City 6-1 last weekend. Considering the quality of the team’s faced neither result is especially disastrous, but if the Cherries want to move themselves out of the EPL relegation zone they will need to muster more of a fight when Newcastle arrives at the Vitality Stadium.

For Eddie Howe any trip to Bournemouth will always hold a special significance as he spent almost a decade in the Cherries’ dugout, taking the club from League 2 to the Premier League before leaving in 2020 following relegation. Howe is now flying-high with Newcastle, but will always be deeply connected to the south-coast club. However, he may be wishing he was returning to his old stomping ground larger roster of players at his disposal, Newcastle’s injury crisis seems to worsen each week with 11 first-team players set to miss this match including Alexander Isak, Sven Botman, Bruno Guimarães, Harvey Barnes and Sandro Tonali.

Howe made his name as a coach at the South Coast club, taking the Cherries from League Two to the Premier League, and can expect a fond reception from supporters, who will not have forgotten what he did for them.

The jury is still out on whether current boss Andoni Iraola is the right man to take Bournemouth forward, however, particularly after last weekend's 6-1 hammering at the hands of Man City saw them drop into the bottom three.

It doesn't get any easier for the Cherries on Saturday as they welcome a Newcastle side looking to build on an eye-catching victory against Arsenal at St James' Park.

After a shaky start to the season, the Mags have really clicked into gear in recent weeks and will be looking to keep pace with the top four ahead of the November international break.

Newcastle was defeated in its last match 2-0 against Borussia Dortmund away from home on November 7. Borussia Dortmund outshot Newcastle by a margin of 17 to nine. Joelinton Cassio took two shots for goalless Newcastle in its match against Borussia Dortmund.

Bournemouth fell on the road 6-1 to Manchester City in its last game on November 4. Manchester City outshot Bournemouth 21 to four. Luis Sinisterra scored the lone goal for Bournemouth (on one shot).

Saturday night’s alright for Newcastle as for the third round of Premier League fixtures in a row they fill the Saturday teatime spot, this time away to struggling Bournemouth (5.30pm, Sky Sports Main Event).

The Magpies arrive on the south coast reeling from a disappointing 2-0 loss to Borussia Dortmund in the Champions League, a result which leaves them on the brink of a group stage exit.

Eddie Howe’s men have lost their last two European assignments and the demands of competing on multiple fronts are beginning to take their toll on the Tyneside team.

With the injuries beginning to stack up, this could be a good time to face Newcastle for Bournemouth, albeit they come into this game having been hammered 6-1 by Manchester City last weekend.

The Cherries find themselves in the relegation zone following that heavy defeat, and the Premier League odds have them as sizeable underdogs to upset top-four hopefuls Newcastle.

The last time Bournemouth beat Newcastle at home was in the second tier in 1989 but now would be a good time to end that run as the pressure mounts on coach Andoni Iraola.

While Europe hasn’t been too kind to Newcastle recently, they have been going well domestically and are unbeaten in seven in the Premier League.

Last Saturday evening, they edged a tight contest with Arsenal 1-0 to move within four points of the top four and are well placed to hang around in the fight for Champions League qualification once more.

However, if they are to repeat last season’s fourth-placed finish, results away from home must improve.

Howe’s men have won one out of five on the road this season and that run extends to one win in seven going back to last season.

Newcastle have been slightly handicapped this term by playing away after each of their Champions League games. Those previous post-Europe matches have produced one win and two draws.

They head to Bournemouth this time worryingly understrength with up to nine players missing through injury. One of those could be ex-Cherries striker Callum Wilson, who had to be withdrawn from the loss to Borussia Dortmund due to a tight hamstring.

The Magpies have been in excellent form on the domestic front, sitting sixth in the table with a 1-0 win over Arsenal last time out. The three defeats to Man City, Liverpool and Brighton feel a long time ago as Eddie Howe's side have put together a strong unbeaten run.

Of course they will be tested at the Vitality Stadium of Saturday, with a long list of players ruled out and Callum Wilson facing a late fitness test. However, the pundits are backing Newcastle to pile on the misery for Andoni Iraola's Cherries, who are third bottom with just one win in the league to date. Here's what they've been saying ahead of the big game.
