The No. 11 ranked Louisville Cardinals face the Virginia Cavaliers at home hoping to avoid a slip-up in Week 11 of the 2023 college football season. Kickoff takes place on Thursday, November 9 at 4:30 p.m. PT/7:30 p.m. ET
The Cardinals head into the matchup after winning 34-3 over the Virginia Tech Hokies in their last outing on November 4. The Cavaliers are coming off of a loss to the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets by the score of 45-17. Jack Plummer had 141 yards on 11-of-12 passing (91.7%) for the Cards in that matchup against the Hokies, with one touchdown and no interceptions.
Isaac Guerendo took 11 carries for 146 yards (13.3 yards per carry) and three touchdowns. Jadon Thompson had 49 yards on two catches (24.5 per reception) with one touchdown in that game. Anthony Colandrea went 21-for-37 with 200 yards, two touchdowns and one interception for the Cavs against the Yellow Jackets. He rushed seven times for 33 yards. Kobe Pace carried the ball six times for 26 yards. He caught three passes for 16 yards and one touchdown. Malik Washington recorded 109 yards through the air after 11 catches (on 16 targets).

Thrash missed the Cards prior game against Virginia Tech, so make sure to keep an eye on his status on a short week. Thrash is the clear leader in the Lousiville passing game, hauling in 39 catches for 623 yards with four touchdowns. For reference, the next highest tally is Chris Bell with 13.
If Muskett can't go on a short week it'll be the freshman Colandrea, who does have experience this season, albeit all in losing efforts. Colandrea has started three games and appeared in five, passing for 1,123 yards with seven touchdowns and seven interceptions.
While injuries are going to play a role in this game and are worth monitoring, I'm eyeing the over in this one. Louisville has been an explosive offense all season, averaging more than nine yards per pass attempt and 31st in explosive play rate. The Virginia defense is towards the bottom of the ACC and have zero semblance of a pass rush, tallying only eight sacks on the year.
Louisville should be able to move the ball with relative ease in this one and convert from in close as Virginia is allowing touchdowns on more than 74% of opponents trips inside the red zone, 117th in the nation.
Meanwhile, the Virginia offense has been on the rise over the last several weeks. While Muskett has been playing good football under center, there's not much of a drop-off to Colandrea, who has a gun slinger mentality out there and is prone to plenty of explosive plays (both good and bad in the name of interceptions).
If it's Colandrea, he'll look to keep pushing the ball down the field, he passed for more than 260 yards in three starts this season and test a Louisville defense that is strong down-to-down, top 10 in success rate, but outside the top 80 whne it comes to explosive pass defense.
After upsetting a ranked UNC on the road and forcing overtime in Miami the next week, the Cavaliers appeared to be red-hot (relatively). Then, they returned home to face Georgia Tech and got demolished. That 45-17 loss begins with the defense allowing 514 yards without committing a turnover. Virginia is up to 395.4 yards allowed every week (second-most in the ACC). That game also put them in last place conference-wide with 32.4 points per game. The Cavaliers give up 180.3 rushing yards per game (4.8 per carry) while surrendering the other 215.1 yards through the air. Eight of Virginia's nine opponents have reached at least 20 points. Four of those nine scored more than 35. Getting stops is a struggle for the Cavaliers.
Last weekend's results were also concerning because Virginia only mustered 351 yards against a Georgia Tech defense giving up 455.2 per game. That lofty number is after Virginia brought it down. Three turnovers also limited the Cavaliers' output to 17 points. Malik Washington was fantastic again, catching 11 passes for 109 yards. He's averaging 126.9 yards and 9.4 receptions per game in Virginia's last eight contests. However, six different rushes only combined for 119 yards after 29 carries. It's right in line with their season average of 120.2 rushing yards per game, the second-fewest in the ACC. Considering the team's quarterbacks have combined for 12 interceptions, an ACC-worst this season, they need more than that on the ground. Averaging 23.1 points per game has been hard-earned for Virginia this year, and Thursday won't be any easier.
No. 11 Louisville hosts Virginia in a Thursday night Atlantic Coast Conference showdown. The Cardinals have been one of college football's surprise success stories in 2023 with an 8-1 start to Year 1 of the Jeff Brohm era. With a win over the Cavaliers, Brohm's team would take another significant step forward towards a stunning berth in the ACC Championship Game.
Louisville is fresh off a 34-3 home blowout win over Virginia Tech. Cardinals running back Isaac Guerendo stole the show in a win over the Hokies by rushing for 146 yards and three touchdowns on only 11 touches. Louisville's lone loss this season came at the hands of Pitt on Oct. 14.
Since recording consecutive wins over William & Mary and North Carolina last month, Virginia has dropped back-to-back contests. The Cavaliers most recent 45-17 loss to Georgia Tech dropped them to 2-7 on the year. With bowl eligibility off the table, Virginia must embrace the role of spoiler down the stretch. That starts with an opportunity to derail the Cardinals' ACC title hopes.
Brohm had a chance to come home to Louisville this offseason after Scott Satterfield departed for the vacant job at Cincinnati. It's safe to say he's making the most out of his first season at his alma mater. The Cardinals can clinch a berth in the ACC title game for the first time in program history with wins over Virginia and Miami. Louisville closes out the regular season with a matchup against in-state rival Kentucky. If the Cardinals run the table and knock off Florida State in the conference championship game, they'll be in great position for a College Football Playoff berth.
Virginia quarterback Tony Muskett is considered day-to-day after suffering a high ankle sprain against Georgia Tech. The Cavaliers had to bring on freshman signal caller Anthony Colandrea for the rest of the game and in the process, burned his redshirt year. Muskett and Colandrea have split time at the position this season and it's unclear who the starter will be on Thursday. The Cavaliers may have more of an incentive to play Colandrea going forward now that redshirting is off the table.
Louisville has been lights out at Cardinal Stadium dating back to last season. The Cadinals can tie the second-longest home winning streak in program history with a win against the Cavaliers. The longest home win streak in Louisville history occurred between 2003-07, when the team won 20 consecutive home games. In five home games this season, Louisville has won by an average of 30.2 points.
The Cardinals boast a strong defense, ranking 13th in the country in points allowed (16.3), and have won consecutive games by at least 20 points. They are also much better offensively at home than on the road, jumping from 32.9 points per game on the season to 40.4 at L&N Federal Credit Union Stadium. One loss to Pitt is the only blemish on Louisville's resume. They need to keep pace with Florida State for a shot at the ACC title, making every game a must-win for the Cardinals. Virginia has the opportunity now to spoil the party.
